My notes and impressions.

I’m glad to introduce the mosaic artist Kate Kerrigan to you today.

J’ai le  grand plaisir de vous présenter aujourd’hui Kate Kerrigan, artiste mosaïste.

Kate Kerrigan, originally from Wisconsin, has been a San Francisco Bay Area resident since 1994.

I’ve discovered Kate’s art with her work named “February morning, Paris”.

This mosaic I like so much made me keep on investigating about CMA (http://mosaicsandceramics.ning.com/).

Created by Pam Givens, this international website dedicated to broadcasting mosaic art, makes possible for mosaic artists all over the world to share their artistic practices and to show their works to a larger public, whether expert or neophyte.

In Kate Kerrigan’s gallery, I could admire other masterpieces such as "Rainy Day, Central Park".

They made me feel like writing about them and about Kate.

This American woman, who is a San Francisco Bay area resident, has been making mosaics since 1994.

She uses photography to get instantaneity, stillness, centring, the weather, atmospheres.

The works I’m referring to are full of a kind of nostalgy, of beautiful melancholy.

Kate's way of cutting tessera is close to Signac’s impressionism, because of the pictorial aspect of her art.

The outdoor sceneries the represents evoke memories, journey diaries.

She captures emotions, essential elements.

Only talent, patience and determination can explain her ability to reproduce these things. It must take her hours to reach this perfection.

I looked at her other works but I think the most mature and perfect mosaics she made are the two “masterpieces” I mentioned above.

Le coup de coeur pour cette mosaïque m'a incité à poursuivre mes investigations sur CMA.
Crée par Pam Givens, CMA, site  de diffusion de l'Art de la Mosaïque au plan international, propose aux mosaïstes du monde entier d'échanger sur leurs pratiques artistiques et de montrer à un  plus grand public averti ou novice leurs oeuvres.

Dans la galerie j'ai pu admirer d'autres chefs-d'œuvre  comme rainy day, Central Park.
C'est à propos de cette œuvre-là que l'envie m'est venue de prendre ma plume et d'écrire  à propos de Kate.
Américaine, résidente de la Baie de San Francisco où elle mène son activité artistique, elle crée de la mosaïque depuis 1994.
Elle s'appuie sur la photographie afin de saisir l'instantané, l'air du temps, le temps qu'il fait, l'immobile, l'épure d'un cadrage, une ambiance.
Ces oeuvres-là sont empreintes d'une certaine nostalgie et de mélancolie magnifique.
Sa manière de couper la tesselle se rapproche de l’impressionnisme de Signac, par la forme picturale son art.

 
Sa représentation de décors extérieurs fait penser à des souvenirs, des carnets de voyage.
Ainsi elle capte l'émotion, l'essentiel, son souvenir.
Le restituer de la sorte tient au talent, à la force de patience et de détermination à oeuvrer des heures durant afin d'atteindre cette extase, cette perfection.

J'ai découvert d'autres oeuvres, d'autres matières.
Cependant, je pense qu'avec  ces deux "master-pièce" elle atteint maturité, classe et perfection.

My questions:

How did the idea of the “mosaique” come to you?

Comment la mosaïque s'est imposée à vous?

"I wanted to learn how make a mosaic table top and found a local workshop on how to do so.   While making the mosaic, I fell in love with the hands-on medium.  A shiver ran up my spine as I realized I could apply the creativity of my graphic art/photography background to mosaic!"

"J’ai voulu réaliser une table en mosaïque et j’ai trouvé un atelier pour apprendre à le faire. En travaillant sur cette mosaïque, j’ai été séduite par l’aspect direct de la technique. J’ai été bouleversée lorsque j’ai réalisé que je pouvais exprimer ma créativité graphique/photographique à travers la mosaïque !"

In what period of your life?

À quel moment de votre vie ?

 "1998.  I was 28 years old."

"En 1998. J’avais alors 28 ans."

What part occupies the mosaic in your life? 

Quel part la mosaïque occupe-t-elle dans votre vie ?

"When I am working, I generally work 3-4 hours/day until it is finished.  I am not always working on a piece, but I am always thinking about one! "

"Lorsque je travaille sur une œuvre, j’y passe en général 3 à 4 heures par jour jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit terminée. Je n’ai pas toujours une œuvre en cours de réalisation mais j’ai toujours une création en tête."

What brings you the mosaic?

Que vous apporte la mosaïque ?

"I like working with my hands and the textures of the materials.  I find that doing mosaic relaxes me and is very meditative.  It has taught me patience!"

"J’aime travailler avec mes mains et la texture des matériaux me plaît. Je trouve que faire de la mosaïque est détendant et très proche de la contemplation. Cela m’a appris à être patiente !"

Can you define your approach, your style?

Pouvez-vous définir votre approche, votre style ?

"Currently I am interpreting my photographic compositions into mosaic."

"En ce moment je fais des mosaïques à partir de mes compositions photographiques"

What work would define the best your art?

Quelle approche définirait le mieux votre art ?

"Classic in terms of technique and materials.  Contemporary in terms of composition.  I lean towards realism/represenational."

"Classique en termes de technique et de matériaux. Contemporain en termes de composition. Je penche vers le réalisme/le figuratif."

What are your subjects and topics of predilection?

Quels sont vos sujets et vos thèmes de prédilection ?

"Since I work from my photography, I am drawn to urban scenes, usually including some architecture, trees and perhaps some people. I am drawn to shadows, reflection, and light.  I like working with shading and small details.  I will probably do some natural landscapes soon."

"Étant donné que je travaille à partir de mes photos, les scènes urbaines, qui comportent souvent des éléments architecturaux, des arbres et éventuellement des personnes, m’intéressent. Je suis attirée par les ombres, les reflets et la lumière. J’aime travailler avec les ombres et les détails. Je vais sûrement bientôt faire des paysages naturels."
